ESG is a framework used to assess how a company or organisation operates on a number of sustainability and ethical issues.
As an environmental business, Andel recognises its responsibility to play an active role in carbon reduction and be seen as a steward of the planet. On a social level, Andel is committed to best practice in managing relationships with employees, suppliers, customers and the communities where it operates. Governance defines a set of rules and best practices, along with a series of established processes that determine how Andel is managed and controlled.
Phillip Parker, Head of Compliance and Health and Safety
Environmental Management is undertaken by our Head of Compliance, Health and Safety, Phillip Parker as part of Andel’s ISO14001:2015 accreditation.
To manage environmental issues under ISO 14001:2015, organisations must establish, implement, maintain, and continually improve an Environmental Management System (EMS). This international standard provides a structured framework for identifying, controlling, and improving environmental performance, forming an essential backbone to Andel’s ESG commitment.
Joe Harris, Net Zero & Sustainability Coordinator manages issues and improvements around the execution of Andel's highly successful Net Zero implementation. Since committing to Net Zero, Scope 1 and 2 targets in 2025, and Scope 3 by 2030, Andel has implemented numerous changes to the business.
Andel has received ‘Achiever’ category in its pledge to the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission, due to the efforts and strategies that have been put in place.
'Be the change you wish to see!'
Joe Harris, Net Zero & Sustainability Coordinator, leads Andel's environmental strategy
As a response to the current threat of climate change, Andel started carbon accounting in 2019, implementing systems and procedures to track and monitor a number of broad areas of activity within the business within Scope 1, 2 and 3 (direct and indirect) corporate carbon emissions.
At Andel, environmental responsibility is at the heart of everything we do. Our mission is to make water sustainable for a cleaner, safer environment – and that means taking bold action on our own carbon footprint as well as helping customers protect theirs.
We are committed to:
Joe leads our environmental strategy and oversees our carbon accounting, ensures compliance with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and drives projects across energy, fleet, logistics and waste reduction. His work keeps Andel accountable and ensures that sustainability is not just a goal, but a measurable part of Andel's growth.
In 2019, Andel committed to achieving net zero carbon. Since then, Andel has taken major steps – from switching to renewable energy and investing in electric vehicles to embedding sustainability into procurement, logistics and waste management.
Because transparency matters, Andel has created a dedicated Net Zero Journey page. This will be a live, working record of our progress, showing the milestones reached so far and the actions still ahead. Content coming soon.
It demonstrates how Andel is turning ambition into action and leading by example in our industry.

Through Shelley's efforts, Andel has adopted a strong social agenda and is committed to investing in local community projects and charities and a social and ethical business approach, including providing training and supporting health, safety, wellbeing and equality in the workforce.
Andel enjoys finding unique and niche organisations that benefit on a large scale from a bit of financial help and the company has a long history of charitable work.
Seven Andel volunteers drove to Poland to personally deliver five tonnes of humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
Andel donated £1,500 needed to help Yahyay, a Kenyan fisherman to achieve his dream, to own his own boat and support his family.
Regular work events to raise money and donations in support of local charities and food banks.
Andel donated €3,000 to sponsor a labrador to the Romanian charity, Light into Europe, a British-Romanian charity that supports and empowers people with vision and hearing loss to be able to regain their independence and mobility.
For the second year running, Andel provided staff and profits from flood defence work to help slow the flow of rainwater runoff on steep slopes which can lead to flooding downstream. Tom Coxhead, Director of Leeds Coppice Workers, said: “Andel clearly cares about the environment and climate change and is putting their money where their mouth is. This is the second year running they have supported us, and they have come out both years with their staff to help install the projects they have funded.”
Andel has a proactive approach to the wellbeing of the team.
Staff are encouraged to volunteer and participate in corporate days such as tree planting for slow the flow schemes and maintaining the wildflower meadow. This supports Andel's aim to create a working environment that empowers everyone to play their part in improving the environment and being a part of the bigger solution.
A number of staff incentives, initiatives and support have been put in place such as Perkbox, Green Team meat-free Thursdays, mental health support and social events such as regular barbecues alongside the wildflower meadow.
Staff are also encouraged to improve their personal development and are supported with learning and enrolling on relevant courses.
