ESG is a framework used to assess how a company or organisation operates on a number of sustainability and ethical issues.
As an environmental business, Andel recognises its responsibility to play an active role in carbon reduction and be seen as a steward of the planet. On a social level, Andel is committed to best practice in managing relationships with employees, suppliers, customers and the communities where it operates. Governance defines a set of rules and best practices, along with a series of established processes that determine how Andel is managed and controlled.
The Environmental side of Andel's ESG framework is managed by Joe Harris, Net Zero & Sustainability Coordinator. Since committing to Net Zero, Scope 1 and 2 by 2025, and scope 3 by 2030, Andel has implemented numerous changes to the business such as its pledge to the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission, receiving ‘achiever’ category due to the efforts and strategies that have been put in place.
As a response to the current threat of climate change, Andel started carbon accounting in 2019, implementing systems and procedures to track and monitor a number of broad areas of activity within the business within Scope 1, 2 and 3 (direct and indirect) corporate carbon emissions.
. This included a thorough review of energy, fuel, water, vehicles, hotel usage, flights, land travel, logistics, commuting, consumption and waste.
Joe set up the 'Green Team' where representatives from each department meet regularly to provide feedback, suggest new ideas, highlight issues and implement agreed green initiatives.
Then Net Zero sub groups were created from each department with directors ensuring that policies are implemented and monitored and improvements are made in each part of the business.
In 2021 Andel moved its head office to Dodworth Business Park to premises with a much higher EPC rating.
Also in 2021, Andel switched to a renewable energy provider for both electricity and gas, saving 80,000 kWh of fossil fuel per year.
In the same year, EV chargers were installed in the car park and the entire car and van fleet is in the process of transitioning to electric.
In 2023, Andel created a wildflower meadow at head office on the busy A628. The meadow has reduced ongoing ground maintenance costs, improved biodiversity, provided a wildlife habitat, brightened up an industrial estate, sequestered carbon in the soil and allowed staff to engage in a rewarding environmental project.
Also in 2023, motion-sensor LED lighting was installed throughout the building, delivering an energy saving of over 70% and saving over 6,500 kWh of energy per annum and a new state-of-the-art heating and cooling system was installed, making the old gas central heating system almost entirely redundant.
Andel switched logistics suppliers to DPD and Speedy Freight. DPD is aiming to be the UK’s most sustainable delivery company. Speedy Freight, a locally-based Sheffield company, delivers Andel's more specialised shipments. Andel and the logistics supply chain now delivers a more efficient and streamlined service resulting in shipments travelling fewer miles in transit.
Andel has replaced its fleet of vehicles with electric cars, installed EV chargers at head office for all staff and reduced its fossil fuel fleet by 80% with plans to de-carbonise the remaining fleet and reduce its size, reducing the carbon footprint even further. All new cars purchased are now EV and Andel plans to have switched the entire van fleet to EV by 2028.
It is Andel's commitment that all business flights are carbon-offset, if possible, at the point of sale. Andel will manage the offset for any flights where the provider is not able to do so.
Andel is committed to developing a sustainable supply chain for the components required in its manufacturing operation. All suppliers are required to provide EPDs (Environmental Performance Declarations) for all parts purchased as well as providing any relevant supporting environmental credentials.
Following a detailed life-cycle analysis of the materials the company uses including after-life disposal and use, in 2022 Andel changed refuse collection to a company that could weigh the amount of waste and include recycling and food as a waste stream which meant 99.6% of waste has been diverted from landfills.
As part of Andel's ongoing focus on R&D, all products are subject to scrutiny in terms of environmental impact, from cradle to grave. Working with the Net Zero team, detailed work is done looking at comparisons of all the various products and materials available in the search to make Andel’s supply chain as sustainable as possible.
It is Andel's vision to be fully Net Carbon Zero through scopes 1 to 3 by 2030, reducing its carbon footprint by 40%. Andel is fully committed to its Net Zero journey, collaborating with local businesses and communities to benefit the local environment as well as the bigger picture in terms of the overall carbon impact of the business. Andel's vision is to lead by example as a manufacturing SME and to encourage other companies to join in the journey to Net Zero to create a more sustainable future.

Andel enjoys finding unique and niche organisations that benefit on a large scale from a bit of financial help and the company has a long history of charitable work.
Seven Andel volunteers drove to Poland to personally deliver five tonnes of humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
Andel donated £1,500 needed to help Yahyay, a Kenyan fisherman to acheive his dream, to own his own boat and support his family.
Regular work events to raise money and donations in support of local chariities and food banks.
Andel donated €3,000 to sponsor a labrador to the Romanian charity, Light into Europe, a British-Romanian charity that supports and empowers people with vision and hearing loss to be able to regain their independence and mobility.
For the second year running, Andel provided staff and profits from flood defence work to help slow the flow of rainwater runoff on steep slopes which can lead to flooding downstream. Tom Coxhead, Director of Leeds Coppice Workers, said: “Andel clearly cares about the environment and climate change and is putting their money where their mouth is. This is the second year running they have supported us, and they have come out both years with their staff to help install the projects they have funded.”
Andel has a proactive approach to the wellbeing of the team.
Staff are encouraged to volunteer and particiate in corporate days such as tree planting for slow the flow schemes and maintaining the wildflower meadow. This supports Andel's aim to create a working environment that empowers everyone to play their part in improving the environment and being a part of the bigger solution.
A number of staff incentives, initiatives and support have been put in place such as Perkbox, Green Team meat-free Thursdays, mental health support and social events such as regular barbecues alongside the wildflower meadow.
Staff are also encouraged to improve their personal development and are supported with learning and enrolling on relevant courses.
