Andel's Net Zero Log

Introduction

Andel is on a mission to make water sustainable for a cleaner, safer environment — and that means tackling our carbon footprint head-on. Our Net Zero journey is about more than compliance: it’s about leading by example, showing our customers, partners and communities that sustainable growth is possible.

Here we share our journey in full: the milestones already reached, the changes underway, and the commitments still ahead. From investing in green energy and electric vehicles to cutting waste and rethinking supply chains, this page is a transparent record of our progress.

Overview of key milestones

  • March 2020 – Turnover £4.9m, carbon footprint 1,060 tonnes CO₂e (Scopes 1–3).

  • 2020 – Committed to achieving net zero by 2025.

  • 2022 – Appointed a dedicated Net Zero employee.

  • 2022 – Strengthened commitment: net zero across Scopes 1 & 2 by 2025, Scopes 1–3 by 2030. Over 80% of emissions are Scope 3.

  • 2022 – Publicly declared through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi); committed to offsetting residual Scope 1 & 2 emissions from 2025.

  • 2022–2025 – Major investments across energy, fleet, logistics and supply chain; annual carbon accounting.

  • 2025 – Achieved a 38% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions (vs. 2022). Committed to SBTi and to offset all emissions (Scopes 1–3).

  • 2025 onwards – SBTi target: reduce absolute Scope 1 & 2 GHG emissions by 62% by 2030 (baseline 2019–20) and continue to measure and reduce Scope 3.

How we are reducing emissions

Andel is reducing emissions while continuing to grow sustainably.

  • In 2019–20, 82% of our footprint was Scope 3.

  • By 2023–24, this rose to 92%, showing the challenge of supply chain emissions.

  • Since 2022, we have cut Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 38%.

Energy

Progress so far

  • 2021: Switched to Ecotricity (100% renewable electricity and green gas).

  • 2023: Installed PIR/LED lighting at HQ.

  • 2023: Investing in modernised heating and cooling, reducing reliance on gas.

Planned improvements

  • 2024: Install additional window insulation.

  • 2024: Energy-efficient hand dryers.

  • 2025: Replace remaining gas hot water with under-counter systems.

  • 2025–26: Additional EV chargers.

  • 2026–27: Install solar PV with battery storage at HQ.

Fleet

Baseline (2019–20) – 15 cars, 10 vans, 2 HGVs (102 tonnes CO₂e).
Progress

  • 2021: Reduced combustion car fleet by 80%.

  • All vans upgraded to Euro 6 compliance.

Planned improvements

  • 2024–25: No combustion cars.

  • 2026–27: Replace half of van fleet with EVs.

  • 2027–28: Replace remaining ICE vans with EVs.

  • 2028–29: Fully EV van fleet + 1 additional tanker.

  • HGVs: exploring alternatives; current tankers require constant on-site power.

Logistics

  • 2023: Switched to DPD, the UK’s most sustainable delivery company.

  • 97% of over 1,100 vendors are UK-based, cutting transport miles.

  • Commitment to minimise air freight (only used for urgent small items).

Business travel

  • All flights declared; Andel does not rely on airline offsetting schemes.

  • From April 2025: all flights offset via Andel’s chosen schemes.

  • Target: reduce flights as a share of turnover by 60% through remote meetings and tighter approval processes.

  • Personal vehicle use ~1% of footprint; declining as EV adoption increases.

Employee commuting

  • 20–30% of staff have company cars, over 50% of which are EVs.

  • ICE vans (for engineering) are being transitioned to EVs.

  • Internal car-share scheme in place.

  • Hybrid working patterns reduce commuting impact.

Consumption and waste

  • Largest contributor: 520 tonnes in 2021–22.

Progress

  • 2022: Began work on Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

  • 2022–25: Developing internal environmental performance measures.

Waste management

  • ISO14001 certified services:

    • Biffa recycling

    • Scrap metal recycling

    • Oil recovery

    • Battery recycling

Accommodation

  • ~1% of footprint.

  • Tracking systems in place.

  • Flights and accommodation require senior management approval.
