In collaboration with the Scottish Flood Forum, the Andel team has developed a cost-effective, locally tailored flood alert system aimed at providing real-time flood monitoring and early warnings in Bridgefoot, for the Strathmartine Community Resilience Forum.
Bridgefoot is home to several properties near the Digty Burn, an area that faces a heightened risk of surface water flooding during heavy rainfall. As water flows off surrounding farmland, it collects in a natural low point where some homes are located, increasing the risk of flooding. During Storm Babet in 2023, relentless rainfall caused water levels in the burn to rise dramatically, resulting in severe internal flooding, with water levels reaching up to 800mm in some homes.
Thanks to support from insurance providers, the affected properties have been restored and upgraded with robust flood resilience measures. These include self-closing air bricks, flood doors, barrier systems and internal tanking solutions; all designed to prevent future water ingress and protect homes from similar damage in the future.

The Scottish Flood Forum’s mission is to help communities mitigate the impact of flooding by offering immediate support and creating networks of community-led resilience groups. These groups are set up in flood-prone areas to ensure residents have the knowledge and resources they need to respond effectively to flood risks.
Andel FloodAlert is an award-winning, cost-efficient solution that provides local, real-time flood monitoring and alerts to communities, local authorities, and businesses across the UK. This innovative system addresses the gaps where national flood warning services can sometimes be too broad or non-existent.
In partnership with the Scottish Flood Forum, Andel deployed a FloodAlert Bollard sensor unit in Bridgefoot. This sensor communicates via the LoRaWAN network and operates wirelessly, powered by a single AA battery and requiring minimal maintenance, typically only once a year or after significant flood events. To help reduce costs, we worked closely with our trusted local partner, Abertay Gardening Services, to manage the installation.
