Hydrocarbon interceptors – also known as oil separators – are a critical last line of defence before a pollution incident reaches the environment. Unlimited penalties have now been introduced by DEFRA/Environment Agency for companies who pollute the environment: "Companies who pollute the environment can be hit with unlimited financial penalties from the Environment Agency from today (11 December 2023)."
Andel specialises in the inspection, maintenance and installation of interceptors across England, Scotland and Wales, ensuring drainage systems remain safe, efficient and fully compliant with Environment Agency (EA), Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) GPPs (Guidance for Pollution Prevention) – supporting best practice and sustainable water management.
Our services are designed to:
A surface-level visual inspection of hydrocarbon interceptors and associated equipment.
Andel engineers check oil and silt levels and provide a summary report with recommendations. This helps determine whether a dewatering tanker is required.
A full integrity inspection and deep clean of your interceptor system.
Includes CCTV internal assessment and detailed digital reporting using industry-leading software. Any structural or performance issues are flagged for remedial action.
It is strongly recommended that interceptor alarms are fitted and maintained to reduce the risk of pollution between inspections.
Andel provides a full range of services to keep your system operating safely, efficiently and in line with environmental best practice:
Interceptor maintenance involves inspection, cleaning, servicing and reporting of hydrocarbon interceptors (oil separators) to ensure they operate effectively and meet environmental standards. Neglecting maintenance risks pollution incidents, site downtime and heavy penalties.
We recommend a surface-level inspection every 6 months and a full integrity inspection plus deep clean every 5 years – in line with Guidance for Pollution Prevention. These intervals help you stay audit-ready and reduce risk of failure.
Our service covers: de-silt and oil removal, CCTV internal survey, alarm system testing, control panel check, structural repair recommendations, and full compliance reporting.
Regular servicing ensures you meet UK standards such as Environment Agency / Natural Resources Wales / Scottish Environment Protection Agency guidance, including requirements for inspections, alarms and maintenance records. Clear maintenance logs and solid service records help you demonstrate compliance.
Without maintenance, interceptors can become blocked, ineffective or alarm-systems may fail – increasing chances of oil or fuel entering drains, legal action, clean-up costs and reputational damage.
