Andel Cesspool Tanks

Andel Cesspool Tanks

Andel Cesspool Tanks – a modern, compliant alternative to septic systems

Andel’s underground cesspool tanks provide a safe, secure, cost-effective and long-lasting solution for off-mains wastewater storage, with no discharge to the environment.

Regular emptying by a licensed waste contractor is required, making these tanks ideal for low-use or temporary installations.

Constructed from monolithic, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), Andel’s cesspool tanks are manufactured for strength, chemical resistance and long service life.

The seamless, ribbed construction prevents leakage and resists deformation under ground pressure, making installation simple and secure. HDPE offers key advantages over traditional GRP tanks, including lighter handling, easier transport, and reduced risk of damage during delivery or backfilling.

Cesspool tanks, sometimes known as cesspits, are fully enclosed, sealed tanks designed to collect and store untreated domestic wastewater where no mains drainage or sewage treatment is available.

Typical applications:

  • Rural homes and farmhouses
  • Static caravans and mobile homes
  • Holiday cottages and glamping sites
  • Temporary welfare facilities
  • Campsites and seasonal venues
  • Off-grid buildings
  • Emergency accommodation
  • Outdoor events

Regulatory compliance:

  • Building Regulations Part H – Wastewater storage and drainage
  • Environment Agency – General Binding Rules: no discharge from storage-only systems
  • Water Industry Act 1991 – Duty to prevent pollution and store waste safely
  • EA Best Practice – Sealed cesspools for sites without viable treatment
  • EN 12566-1 – European standard for small wastewater storage systems

Cesspools vs Septic Tanks

Recent changes to regulations restrict the use of traditional septic tanks – particularly where discharge affects surface water or groundwater. Cesspools are fully sealed and legally compliant, making them ideal for sites with no safe outflow. While regular emptying is required, cesspools pose no pollution risk and avoid the regulatory complexity now associated with septic tanks.

Precision-moulded for consistent quality

Andel’s cesspool tanks are manufactured using a three-stage production process: rotational moulding, controlled cooling and final chilling. This method creates a seamless, high-strength structure with uniform wall thickness.

An automated control system ensures consistent quality and durability in every tank produced.

Installation and maintenance

Andel’s cesspool tanks are supplied ready for underground installation and require no power or treatment components.

Regular emptying must be carried out by an authorised waste disposal contractor in accordance with Environment Agency guidelines. High-level alarms are recommended to prevent overflow between emptying intervals, and are available as optional accessories.

Customisable for your site

Each tank can be fitted with a riser/extension to suit the site depth and surface finish.
Additional equipment: Extention Shaft NSO 600.

Frequently asked questions

All tanks are manufactured from durable, lightweight HDPE, offering long service life, easy handling and greater resistance to leakage compared with traditional GRP tanks.

Septic tanks are no longer recommended under current regulations because they discharge untreated effluent into the ground. Cesspool tanks provide a fully sealed, environmentally responsible and cost-effective alternative.

Andel offers tanks from 2,000 to 5,000 litres, covering everything from small sites to larger commercial installations.

Lockable airtight hatches and optional extension shafts with screw caps ensure secure, easy access while preventing unpleasant smells.

Yes. HDPE construction is leak-tight, impact resistant and designed to withstand frost, soil pressure and pH variations.

Yes. The lightweight modular design allows installation without heavy machinery, ideal for restricted or sensitive sites.

As sealed units, cesspools require periodic emptying by licensed tankering services in line with Environment Agency requirements.

Andel cesspool tanks come with a 10-year warranty, reflecting confidence in their quality and long-term performance.
