Andel FloodWall is a modular design which allows for easy transportation and can be quickly assembled on site in a similar way to conventional wood fencing.
Andel FloodWall is primarily constructed from 100% recycled post-consumer plastic waste that would otherwise go to landfill. Posts have steel-pipe reinforcement to provide added strength for a robust installation. The panels are fitted with horizontal ridge supports to prevent bending if under pressure from floodwater. Panels and posts have an aesthetically sympathetic wood-effect finish to blend into any environment.
In a flood event, the greatest force is exerted where the flood defence meets the ground. Special care and development has been undertaken to ensure that FloodWall will withstand the full force of floodwater in a flood event.
Steel-pipe reinforced posts are fitted deep into the ground to the same height as the wall, into a concrete foundation, providing a level of strength that will resist the full weight of floodwater in the severest of floods. FloodWall has been designed and tested to meet the requirements of British Standard BS 851188-1:2019 for Flood Resistance Products.
FloodWall can be installed on soft ground or onto an existing, suitable hard surface. Posts are set into a concrete foundation providing a robust and effective weight-bearing structure. Panels are secured to the posts with self-tapping screws, compressing the waterproof gasket and set into the ground by 100mm to create a water seal.
Through an ongoing R&D partnership with Leeds University and the UK Government’s Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) programme, Andel has integrated advanced geotechnical and hydrological analysis into the overall design and insatllation process for its FloodWall system at any given site.
Using detailed assessments of site-specific soil characteristics, Andel models how water moves through and beneath the ground over time. This enables engineers to understand sub-surface water behaviour, including underground seepage, and to design a tailored FloodWall system that delivers maximum flood resistance and long-term performance for each unique location.
By applying sophisticated tools such as GeoStudio®, Andel’s engineers can simulate soil water flow and analyse seepage patterns beneath the barrier. This data-driven approach determines how quickly and effectively each installation will resist floodwater, ensuring every FloodWall defence system is optimised for the specific ground conditions it protects and determines whether additional measures are required such as flood pumps to deal with the seepage.
The height of the flood defence is calculated based on a flood risk assessment. Panels are available in two sizes: 60cm high x 192cm wide or 80cm high x 192cm wide
If the defences need to exceed the maximum standard panel height, panels can be doubled up to give extra height to a maximum of 1.2 metres. The added panels are sealed with a watertight gasket and additional supports are added to ensure the defence meets the correct requirements.
