The Andel BundGuard® system was developed in 1992 as a response to the UK electricity industry’s growing need for an effective dewatering solution at substation sites.
Today, over 50,000 BundGuard® units are installed worldwide, protecting site operators by preventing hydrocarbons from escaping and contaminating the environment.
However, BundGuard® remains relatively unknown in Australia. Or, so Mark Harris, Andel’s Commercial Director, thought when he teamed up with Martin Pullen of Pump Power, Andel’s Australian distribution partner, to launch BundGuard® 6.
While showcasing the latest BundGuard® at the Global CIGRE Symposium in Cairns in Australia in 2023, the system attracted plenty of interest from the Australian electrical distribution sector. One potential customer was a major electricity infrastructure company which owns, maintains and operates the electrical distribution networks in the Australian East Coast. BundGuard® was a perfect match for their demanding estate of rural substation sites. Typically, Andel expects requests for trial products to satisfy new operators that the hundreds of worldwide references they can supply stand scrutiny.
However, this time was different.
Following the CIGRE Symposium event, Martin Pullen received this email:
Unknown to Andel, four BundGuard® units had been previously installed in substations and performed faultlessly behind the scenes for almost two decades. This was despite being located in the demanding conditions of the rural Australian East Coast.
Records show that the four BundGuard® units were sold to a third-party distributor prior to installation at the substations in 2006.
It is a testament to the original build quality that these ‘vintage’ and now obsolete systems have only required minimal maintenance since installation with no spares required for nearly two decades, a remarkable demonstration of the reliability of Andel’s equipment.
BundGuard® is robust, resilient and reliable and designed to cope with a range of climatic conditions from freezing temperatures to scorching heat, and from heavy rainfall to no rainfall at all. The system can also be configured as an oil recovery system to deal with leaking transformers, a common problem in electrical distribution.
BundGuard® 6, the latest version, incorporates a number of enhancements in communications technology and user functionality. However, the fundamental design remains the same as back in 1992 – a robust, stainless-steel submersible sump unit equipped with probes and a control unit that recognises conductivity in the probes and performs numerous automated tasks.
The system continually monitors, sends alarm notifications and discriminates between water and oil and safely removes rainwater from a bunded area to a drainage system, maintaining the safe required storage capacity of the bund.
BundGuard® 6, incorporates the latest technology and is designed to deal with a range of challenging climatic conditions.
As Mark Harris, Andel’s Commercial Director, commented: “This is great news for Andel and Pump Power and could potentially speed up the BundGuard® roll-out across Australia.
“Unknown to Andel and Pump Power, we have actually had a BundGuard® trial going for nearly two decades and without any issues, in fact with very positive feedback from a senior engineer.
“We have 100% confidence in the performance and reliability of Andel’s products and this unexpected discovery supports the case for BundGuard® being the solution of choice for site operators in all climates around the world.”
For over a quarter of a century Andel has supplied specialist products and services to many of the world’s leading blue chip organisations.
