Case Study

A major European data centre provider required a bespoke leak detection solution across multiple sites in London and the south east

The end-user customer is one of Europe’s leading data centre providers with a strong commitment to the environment, providing state-of-the-art solutions to a long list of blue chip organisations.

The challenge

The centres were built to the latest design specifications with raised floor access, a common feature in data centres. Consequently, the floor voids in data halls needed to be equipped with leak detection sensors to monitor for leaks from water service pipes.

As well as other typical risk areas such as tea points and kitchens, another threat came from ceiling-mounted cooling fan units. If there was a water leak high up, the fans would spray water over sensitive equipment and though alarms would be triggered by under-floor sensors, it could be too late to avoid the risk of damage.

A bespoke solution was needed meeting multiple requirements.

The solution

Floodline® zonal systems with multi-zone panels and a range of sensors

Andel’s Floodline® is a resilient, flexible, future-proof, zonal and distance measuring leak detection system.

For this project, a zonal system was chosen and installed across all the sites.

The installation included Floodline® Multi-Zone control panels, Floodline® high-sensitivity sensor cable and a range of other zonal leak detection equipment such as point sensors and digital refrigerant gas sensors.

To deal with the ceiling-mounted cooling fans, Floodline® high-sensitivity sensor cable was suspended in the halls below the fans. The cables have a fine, multi-filament cellulosic outer covering which draws liquid into detection cores allowing the system to detect and react to the smallest amounts of water.

Floodline® Multi-Zone control panels continually monitor the network of leak detection zones for water and refrigerant gas leaks.

A range of sensors were strategically installed in floor voids and drip trays to protect the server halls, ensuring early leak detection with alarms and automatic valve shut-off systems.

The systems trigger audio-visual alarms as well as sending onward communication to BMS.

Proactive approach

  • Prior to installation, Andel’s chosen Floodline® equipment was supplied to the customer to demonstrate the superior build-quality and functionality and to allow the customer to see and handle the equipment first-hand.
  • The customer was provided with all relevant technical specifications and user information.
  • The project involved detailed assessment and planning and bespoke installation kits were manufactured in advance for each installation team.
  • Andel put together mobile installation crews for each of the sites.

The result

A successful leak detection installation across multiple sites in London and the south east that fulfils the customer’s brief, protecting priority server halls and IT infrastructure in multiple data centres.

Installing Andel’s Floodline® leak detection systems now means the customer has:

  • A cost-effective, reliable and low-maintenance leak detection system across data halls in multiple mission-critical sites.
  • A bespoke, tailored solution for each site.
  • Peace of mind with a leak detection system that will give early warning alarms, automatic valve isolation and onward communication, allowing for evasive action to be taken to avoid any damage.
  • A future-proof solution with a system where additional zones, sensors and upgrades can be added easily and cost effectively.

Testimonial

Andel have done an excellent job on this project from the administration and management to the on-site resources. Many thanks for an efficient project. I am very pleased we decided to go with Andel.
