Providing dependable, automatic cellar flood protection for an 18th-century listed village property in Northamptonshire, ensuring reliable operation and peace of mind even when the home is unoccupied for extended periods.
This historic stone-built village house in Northamptonshire dates back to the mid-18th century and features a traditional stone-vaulted cellar marked 1747, complete with original flagstone flooring.
Like many historic properties, the cellar is vulnerable to groundwater ingress during periods of prolonged or heavy rainfall. Although flooding only occurs a few times each year, the consequences could be significant if water accumulated while the property was unoccupied.
The homeowner therefore needed a reliable flood protection system that could operate automatically and provide confidence even when the property was left empty for long periods.
While researching alternatives, the homeowner searched specifically for a “sump pump with probes”, seeking a system that would avoid the reliability issues associated with mechanical float switches.
Andel’s CellarGuard® system was selected because it uniquely integrates conductive probes and pump control in a single plug-and-play solution.
Unlike traditional float switches, CellarGuard® uses conductive probes with no moving parts. When rising water reaches the probes, conductivity is detected instantly and the pump is activated automatically.
Because there are no mechanical components that can stick or seize, the system remains dependable even after long periods of inactivity.
The homeowner replaced the previous float-controlled arrangement with the CellarGuard® system, providing a more reliable and modern flood protection solution.
Installing the Andel CellarGuard® system provided several key benefits:
Reliable automatic activation of the sump pump, even after long periods of dormancy
Greater peace of mind when the property is unoccupied or the homeowner is travelling
A dependable alternative to traditional mechanical float switch technology
A simple, user-friendly wall-mounted control unit with clear LED status indicators
“My cellar only needs occasional water pumping after exceptional rains, which happens two or three times a year. My previous sump pump used a floating ball switch which proved unreliable when not used for many months between rain episodes.
If I am on holiday abroad in the winter I need to know that I can rely upon the switch operating my sump pump, and I feel that the Andel product is now giving me that.”
Mr Gardner, Homeowner, Northamptonshire
