BundGuard® 5

Automatic and easy-to-fit dewatering solution that discriminates between oil and water

The BundGuard® pollution prevention system was developed by Andel in 1992 as a response to the UK electricity industry’s growing need for an effective dewatering solution at substation sites. Today, over 50,000 BundGuard® units are installed worldwide, protecting site operators and preventing hydrocarbons from escaping and contaminating the environment.

BundGuard® brings the latest communications technology and functionality to Andel’s market-leading bund dewatering system. BundGuard® is a sustainable, cost-effective and easy-to-fit dewatering and high-oil alarm system, comprising robust UV-resistant control panel, submersible sensor / pump assembly and mounting system.

Rigorous tests show that oil present in water discharged by BundGuard® is less than 5 ppm.

BundGuard® expels only water from the containment area

Because most bunds are exposed to the elements and are likely to fill with rainwater, the containment capacity can be compromised creating the risk of oil overtopping the bund wall in the event of a tank failure. Robust measures need to be put in place to extract rainwater from exposed bunds to prevent a pollution incident.

Using advanced circuitry and micro-controller technology, BundGuard® discriminates between oil and water, keeping oil contained and pumping water from the sump in the bunded containment area.

The robust, submersible stainless-steel sensor unit monitors the different liquid levels via a series of conductive probes. The control unit activates the pump as required to remove only clean water, safe to sewer or interceptor, depending on site circumstances.

BundGuard® protects your site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year

Market-leading BundGuard® is a cost-effective, self-contained and easy-to-fit automatic submersible pump and alarm unit that is installed in a sump, within a bund and works continuously and automatically 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Rigorous tests show that oil present in water discharged by BundGuard® is less than 5 ppm. For sensitive site conditions only, If there is no underground interceptor tank, Andel recommends FilterSepta®, a cost-effective above ground system that guarantees a Class 1 discharge of water from the bund to surface water adhereing to EN858-1:2002.

BundGuard® provides a failsafe, dewatering and high oil alarm system, ensuring complete safety with onward communication to BMS and other remote monitoring systems

The submersible sensor unit is equipped with a number of conductive probes that can be configured to suit each individual installation

  • 1Common Probe
  • 2Stop Pump Probe
  • 3Start Pump Probe
  • 4High Water Alarm Probe
  • 5High Oil Level Float Switch Alarm

THE COMMON PROBE 1 creates conductivity with the other probes when immersed in water.

The sensitivity of the probes can be configured to suit all site conditions, ensuring BundGuard® always delivers optimum performance, even in bund water that has low conductivity.

The control unit monitors conductivity between the probes and activates the pump when the water level reaches the START PUMP PROBE 3 and switches the pump off when the water level drops below the STOP PUMP PROBE 2.

If the water level rises and reaches the High WATER ALARM PROBE 4 a second pump will be activated (if fitted).

THE HIGH OIL LEVEL FLOAT SWITCH ALARM 5 puts the control panel into high oil alarm and deactivates the alarm as the level drops below the float switch.

  • AWhen water entering the sump reaches the level of the START PUMP PROBE and the control panel activates the pump and water is pumped out of the sump.
  • BWhen the water level is pumped below the STOP PUMP PROBE, the control panel deactivates the pump. Any oil on top of the water is kept well away from the pump inlets.
  • CIf the water level keeps rising, due to an unusually high volume of water entering the sump (greater than 150 l/m) and reaches the level of the HIGH WATER ALARM PROBE, the control panel will go into high water level alarm and the second pump will be activated (if fitted).

  • DWith a more significant volume of oil in the sump, if water entering the sump raises the level of the oil to the HIGH OIL LEVEL FLOAT SWITCH, the control panel will go into high oil alarm. Because the water has not reached the START PUMP PROBE, the pump is not activated.
  • EIf the water level rises and reaches the START PUMP PROBE, still in high oil alarm, the pump is activated and water is pumped out of the sump.
  • FWhen the water level drops and oil is no longer lifting the HIGH OIL LEVEL FLOAT SWITCH, the control panel will come out of high oil alarm. The data will have been logged for future analysis. When water is pumped below the STOP PUMP PROBE, the pump is deactivated. The oil is never allowed to reach the pump inlets.

Robust, reliable and adaptable

BundGuard® is available in a number of specifications to suit both site conditions and customer requirements. The fundamental design, however, remains the same and BundGuard® can be relied upon to give consistently accurate readings, avoiding the risk of 'chattering', a problem often experienced with some other dewatering pumps, where sensor units are prone to false readings, repeatedly activating on and off and potentially damaging pumps and burning out components.

BundGuard® control panel and submersible sensor unit are supplied as standard in robust, UV-resistant, stainless-steel enclosures. With regular maintenance, BundGuard® units have proven to perform for upwards of 15 years in all weather conditions. BundGuard® control unit can also be also be supplied in a GRP enclosure. The market-leading BundGuard® has a track record that speaks for itself.

Andel has a team of experts that can adapt BundGuard® to deal with a variety of site conditions and special requirements:

  • Semi ATEX units – sensors and pumps for zone 0 areas and control panels fitted in non-hazardous areas
  • Units linked to pH sensors
  • Units linked to Ammonia Sensors
  • Units linked to detect unwanted contaminants in a site's trade effluent
  • Control units can be supplied in GRP enclosures if required to fit customer specifications
  • Automatic sump frost protector systems for extreme weather conditions
  • Adapted to include power coupling for portable generators

Special-builds can be linked to sensors to detect unwanted contaminants in a site's trade effluent, where if high levels are detected, the system will deactivate the pump so the contaminants are contained and do not reach the drainage system.

A bespoke system, using control units in GRP enclosures was built to interface with the glycol system alarms, so that if the glycol system alarms trigger, a signal is sent to immediately disable the BundGuard® pump. The system also alerts the site to initiate a response.

The BundGuard® ORS (Oil Recovery System) has been specifically developed for site operators with leaking transformers.

Frequently asked questions

Andel BundGuard is a cost-effective, self-contained, and easy-to-fit automatic submersible pump and alarm unit designed to dewater oil containment bunds. It works continuously, 24/7/365, to prevent pollution by discriminating between oil and water, expelling only clean water and keeping oil contained.

Bunds are designed to contain oil leaks and spills from storage tanks. However, they are often exposed to the elements and collect rainwater. As a bund fills with water, its containment capacity is reduced, significantly increasing the risk of oil escaping over the bund wall in the event of a tank failure. BundGuard ensures the bund maintains its 110% capacity.

BundGuard system uses advanced circuitry and micro-controller technology to differentiate between oil and water. A robust, submersible stainless steel sensor unit with conductive probes monitors liquid levels in a sump within the bund. When the water reaches a pre-set level, the control unit activates the pump to remove only clean water, safe for discharge to a sewer or interceptor. If oil is detected, the pump deactivates, and an alarm is triggered.

The standard BundGuard pump has a flow rate of approximately 110-150 litres per minute at a 2-3 metre head.

Yes, BundGuard is designed to be used with or without an on-site interceptor. It is guaranteed to pump less than 5 parts per million (ppm) of oil to water, and if required, can be discharged directly to the environment.

Andel offers various sensor unit sizes to suit different sump dimensions, including:

  • Mini Sensor: 350mm x 220mm x 55mm
  • Compact Sensor: 450mm x 180mm x 70mm
  • Standard Sensor: 570mm x 180mm x 70mm
  • XL Sensor: 1000mm x 180mm x 70mm

Yes, BundGuard helps sites comply with regulations like The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations 2001, which recommend using a fail-safe automatic pumping system to remove water from bunds.

The control panel operates on 110/230 VAC. The total power consumption is 440 Watts when one pump is running and 970 Watts with two pumps running.

Maintenance should be carried out every 6 to 12 months, depending on site conditions. Andel also offers comprehensive maintenance support packages.

BundGuard control panel comes with a 10-year warranty.
